Guide to the Virtual Stompede

Welcome to the first, and hopefully last, Virtual Stompede! You'll find some general advice for attending the workshops, social events, and more here. We'll add more information in the days leading up to the Stompede, so be sure to check back.

Please remember that this is a new endeavor for all of us, and technical glitches are bound to happen. When they do, we ask for your patience and understanding.

ENTRY TO EVENTS

• If you are registered for the Virtual Stompede, you will receive information by email that will gain you access to each event directly. If you have not received this information by Friday night, first check your spam folder, and then contact us at info@stompede.com.
• If you are not registered, you will be able to access each event separately by clicking on the ENTER link in the detailed daily schedules below. You will need to provide your name and email address, and you will receive the entry link by email. We are requiring these additional steps to add one layer of security.

STOMPEDE CENTRAL

Stompede Cenrtral is a continuous Zoom meeting that acts much like the Stompede registration desk at our regular event – a place where you can ask questions, report problems, or just hang out. We'll provide the link to Stompede Central here on Saturday morning.

ZOOM EVENTS

Most of our events utilize the Zoom platform. If you are not familiar with Zoom, we highly recommend that you try out a test meeting prior to the Virtual Stompede. Familiarize yourself with the various audio and video controls and screen views, and learn how to use the Chat and Reactions functions.

In general you should keep yourself muted unless invited to unmute yourself by the host, and even then only when actively speaking. During workshops you should generally remain muted and communicate only through the Chat window, unless invited to unmute by the instructor. It would be courteous for you to use your actual name as your screen name, and this is a good place to indicate your preferred pronoun (e.g. "Pat Green - they/them").

There isn't much free time scheduled, and we are catering to different time zones simultaneously. So let it be understood – it is perfectly fine, and even encouraged, to eat your meals in front of everyone else while attending a Zoom event!

YOUTUBE LIVE EVENTS

Our line dance workshops utilize YouTube Live. The instructor will not be able to see or hear you, so you'll need to log in to Chat using a Google (Gmail) account to communicate. If you don't have a Gmail account, it's free and easy to set up, and you can always delete it later. There will generally be a chat moderator who can verbally relay any questions you have to the instructor. Please remember that there is a lag of a few seconds up to a minute between an instructor's action and the time you see and hear it.

For line dance workshops, you may find it most helpful to have a device with a larger screen fixed in one location, rather than a hand-held device. Then when the instructor turns to a new wall, you'll still be oriented correctly.

SOCIAL EVENTS

We're not quite sure how the social events will play out with dozens or possibly hundreds of attendees! During our larger meetings we do plan on using sequential "break-out rooms" to mix and match smaller groups of folks. Mute yourself when you are not speaking. Please remember to be respectful of everyone else. (We should probably stay away from politics and religion!) We are a primarily LGBT+ organization, and if you're not OK with that, you probably shouldn't be here. Try to use correct pronouns (and if you're not sure, it's fine to ask!). If you wish to indicate your preferred pronoun, add it to your screen name, as in "Sundance Smith - they/them."

EXHIBITIONS

We have a great line-up of exhibition videos to present using Zoom. Please make sure you are muted durting the performances! There's are big "applause" and "thumbs up" reaction icons you can use to show your appreciation.

For the best viewing experience, you'll want to arrange your windows to view the entirety of the shared videos. Look for control icons to change the display of participants and chat windows, and you can also drag these windows to the edge of your screen. For a more detailed discussion, check out our Zoom Tips created by one of our volunteers.

LINE DANCE EVENTS

We will review all of the line dances taught over the weekend during a special Zoom session from 4:45 to 5:45 on Sunday. We'll have videos that you can follow to help refresh your memeory.

Then we will live-stream an actual live line dance event from 6:00 to 8:00. This session will feature line dances that are popular in San Francisco and across the continent. We’ve compiled a line dance playlist of 30 line dances most likely to appear. We’ve further linked many of these line dances to archived lessons from our Sunday night live-stream lesson series, so you can add more to your repertoire prior to the Stompede weekend. Step sheets and additional resources may be found the line dance page of our Sundance Saloon website.

TROUBLE-SHOOTING

It's the nature of technology in 2020 to run into snags. If you suspect there's an issue on our end, check out our Trouble Page, where we'll list any known problems and solutions. In some cases we may provide an alternate link to an event. You can also check in at Stompede Central, a continuous Zoom meeting through the day where you can ask questions and report problems.

DONATIONS

While we are not charging for the Virtual Stompede, and we understand that many of you are having a financially challenging year, we welcome tax-deductible donations to our Stompede Fund from those who are in a position to contribute.
